This 2022 Vin de California Pet-Nat highlights a blend of organically farmed vineyards along the coast. Warmer days help the grapes achieve phenolic ripening while cool evening breezes retain freshness. We source the Zinfandel from Komrosky Vineyard and the Pinot Noir from a new vineyard in the Madson portfolio, Marine Terrace. Perched above Watsonville, this vineyard rests on a terrace of ancient marine sandstone soils.

The vibe: This wine has immense depth for a Rosé with a tropical burst on the nose. Notes of guava and salted watermelon follow. Greet strawberry cream on the palate while savoring the acidity with a kiwi-skin finish. Pairs well with the budding warmth of Spring and anticipation for Summer days.

The winemaker: Winemaker and founder Cole Thomas worked as an organic vegetable farmer, edible landscaper, and manager of the Demeter Seed Library prior to his career in wine. He discovered natural winemaking techniques while working in New Zealand for Prophet’s Rock and Amisfield Winery in 2017. He returned to the Santa Cruz Mountains to launch Madison Wines in Spring 2018 and continues to follow natural winemaking techniques to make California wines that express terroir with poise and concentration.

The geeky details: At harvest, we pressed the fruit to extract limited color and phenolics. Fermentation occurred spontaneously and naturally. We bottled the wine with natural sugars still present for effervescence. We bottle this wine “sans soufre” or without sulfur.  Please expect some solids and tartrates in the bottle.
