Donkey & Goat Fernow Ranch Nero d'Avola 2023
From Donkey & Goat:
One thing California does not lack is sunshine. As the climate continues to change some would say we have an abundance of warmth and sunny days. This has changed the grape varieties that grow well in our environment. Grapes that ripen later and retain acidity thrive in the dry mediterranean heat and produce fresh balanced wines. As we have seen this transition over the past 20 years we have been on the hunt for varieties that match these qualifications. Originally this was Rhone grapes like Grenache, Mourvedre and Syrah, but recently we have been more and more drawn to wines from Southern Italy. Grapes like Falanghina, Fiano, Greco Bianco, Nero D’Avola, and Frappato thrive in the heat and hold their acidity amazingly well. We have become enamored with the quality of these wines and have sought them out anywhere we can find these relatively rare varietals.
This year's Nero D’Avola from Fernow Ranch is our first opportunity to work with the grape but most certainly not the last. 2023 was a cold year and despite being picked relatively late this wine is chock full of acidity and tannin. While alluring and fresh in its youth it is a monster of a wine that will definitely benefit from further aging in the bottle.
Deep ruby red bordering on violet, suggesting a powerful and concentrated wine. The aroma is rustic and intense with pronounced notes of blackberry bramble, violets and black cherries. There's an underlay of dusty earth and spice, reminiscent of an Italian late-summer garden when, everything is sun kissed and surrenders to the heat, giving up its moisture, beginning to dessicate. As it opens up, the fruit and florality amplifies like a bouquet of fresh fruit and blossoms. The palate is full-bodied with velvety tannins that provide structure without overwhelming the palate. Flavors of black plum and raspberry dominate, complemented by a touch of dried thmye and a hint of fennel. The acidity is vibrant, balancing the richness of fruit with freshness, leading to a long and satisfying finish. This wine showcases the grape's potential in California with its ripe fruit profile, balanced by nuanced spice and earthy elements. Ideal for pairing with hearty dishes like grilled meats or aged cheeses, yet equally enjoyable on its own.
